These random, disparate scenarios all eventually will go through one man: former assassin Rōnin Phythian. One year after shutting down the murder-for-hire outfit known as the Greenwich Global Group, he now is pursuing justice for the victims of his crimes, while seeking vengeance against those who engaged his services. Once known as “the deadliest man alive” because of his highly attenuated extrasensory competence, he still possesses an extraordinary

Phythian had switched from caffeine to mineral water when they sat down, but he had yet to touch the glass that the young woman with the long lashes and glossy red lips had set in front of him. âI trust you didnât have any trouble running this,â he said as he took a cursory glance at the single sheet of paper.
âItâs what I do,â Moravec waved him off. âAs youâll see, itâs just a basic data merge. Victimâs name, line of work he or she was involved in, location and method of death. Along with the specific tarot card found at each scene, and the date of the killing.â
The two men were seated at a sidewalk café on a quiet street just a couple blocks from the Czech embassy on Avenue Charles Flouquet. Moravec had not been surprised to hear Phythianâs voice when he had called last evening, even though Interpol reports still listed his American friend as dead. Not surprised because it was Moravec who, several months ago, had provided him with new passportsâSwiss, Dutch, Canadian, and Irishâand had procured the safety deposit boxes in Athens and Cairo. Boxes into which thousands of Euros in small notes had been stashed.
Phythian gave a cursory glance up and down the street. This being Paris, he assumed he would be within view of at least a dozen surveillances cameras at any one moment. Nothing he could do about that, other than keep his face turned low, eyes shaded by a pair of Ray-Bans and a Basque beret heâd picked up in a thrift shop. Heâd also turned his collar up against the afternoon, which had grown chilly, with a steady breeze blowing down the Seineâand if he got really paranoid, he could always use the surgical face mask left over from the pandemic that he always carried with him.
Fortunately, the sidewalks were filled with men and women hustling from one place to another, blocking the AI software from making a positive ID, or so he hoped. He was less concerned with the pedestrians themselves, since none of them seemed to be paying him any mind as they went about their respective routines. If anyone was looking for him specifically, he would know.
He glanced down at the single sheet of paper his Czech friend had given him, studied the names and accompanying information:
⢠Stephane Kroeger / 48 / President/IMF / shot / Nice / The Magician / Dec. 28
⢠Alain Geiger / 49 / pharmaceuticals / Zurich / shot twice / The Sun / Jan. 18
